Understanding NPT Pipe Thread Sizes

NPT sizes do not match the actual outside diameter of the threads. This is the most common reason fittings get ordered incorrectly.

NPT sizes (1/4", 3/8", 1/2", etc.) refer to the inside diameter of the pipe, not the diameter of the male threads.

Approximate actual thread diameters:

1/4" NPT → ~0.54" OD
3/8" NPT → ~0.675" OD
1/2" NPT → ~0.84" OD
3/4" NPT → ~1.05" OD

NPT threads are tapered, meaning they seal by tightening into the taper and require thread sealant or PTFE tape.

Understanding AN/JIC Flare Fittings

Flare fittings (AN or JIC) use a 37° metal-to-metal flare to seal—NOT the threads. They are straight threads and do not require tape or sealant.

Common AN/JIC sizes:

-4 (1/4") → approx. 7/16" thread OD
-6 (3/8") → approx. 9/16" thread OD
-8 (1/2") → approx. 3/4" thread OD
-10 (5/8") → approx. 7/8" thread OD

AN sizes refer to the inside diameter of the tubing, not the outside diameter of the fitting threads.

How to Identify Your Fitting Type

For NPT: measure thread OD and compare to the chart (it will not match the named size)
For AN/JIC: look for a 37° flare seat and measure thread OD
NPT is tapered; AN/JIC is straight-thread
NPT uses sealant; AN/JIC does not
